🐾 Dog Walking Weather Advisory

Paw-safe pavements, ice risk and sunburn watch for the next 8 days • Last checked: 00:39 on Thursday 29 October 2026

You know the tarmac test: press the back of your hand to the pavement for five seconds - if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for paws. This page does that sum for you every morning and afternoon, plus keeps an eye on ice underfoot in winter and UV for pale noses and thin coats in summer, so you know before you clip the lead on whether it's a grass-only day, a good one for the full park loop, or worth waiting for the sun to drop a bit.

Morning frost risk vs afternoon pavement estimate, and peak UV

About this data

Pavement temperature is an estimate, not a measurement - no free weather service actually measures tarmac surface temperature, it isn't a standard reading. This page estimates it from the afternoon air temperature and cloud cover, using the widely-quoted rule of thumb that direct sun pushes asphalt roughly 20-25°C above air temperature on a clear day, less under cloud. It's a good guide for planning ahead, but the real, definitive test is still the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds - if you can't hold it there, it's too hot for paws, whatever this page says.

Morning low temperature and UV index come straight from Open-Meteo's forecast for Southampton, checked every 30 minutes. Ice risk uses the same ≤3°C frost threshold as the rest of the site's cold-weather pages; road salt and grit can irritate paw pads even when it isn't actually icy, so a quick paw rinse after a winter walk is never a bad idea. For the human-focused version of this idea, see the Cycling & Running Conditions Index.
