Best Time to Visit Southampton

A month-by-month guide based on real 1991-2020 Met Office climate averages for Southampton - not just general impressions of "typical British weather".

Southampton sits on the sheltered, south-facing Solent coast, giving it a mild oceanic climate that's among the warmer and sunnier parts of the UK for its latitude - it's sheltered enough that the city still holds the official UK record for the hottest June temperature ever recorded, 35.6°C back in 1976. The averages below are based on the current 1991-2020 Met Office climate normals for the city, so they reflect what's actually typical here rather than a generic UK forecast.

☀️ Sunniest & driest: July, with 223.8 hours of sunshine and just 44.0mm of average rainfall - the best combination of warm, dry and bright.
🌿 Best value shoulder month: May - mild, increasingly sunny and low rainfall, typically before peak summer crowds and prices arrive.
☔ Wettest: November, with an average of 99.9mm of rain and only 76.3 hours of sunshine - though it's also when the Christmas Market gets going.

Month by Month

January Avg 8.8°C / 3.2°C

Southampton's coldest month on average, and its wettest three-month block (Nov-Jan) is still running. Short days, frequent rain, and the odd overnight frost - a month for cosy pubs and indoor attractions rather than a coastal stroll.

Rainfall: 89.7mm
Sunshine: 63.4 hours
February Avg 9.1°C / 3°C

Slightly drier than January with a touch more daylight, though still firmly winter. The joint-coldest month by mean daily temperature, and frost or the odd cold snap remain likely.

Rainfall: 63.9mm
Sunshine: 82.7 hours
March Avg 11.5°C / 4.3°C

The first real turn towards spring - noticeably drier than the depths of winter and daylight lengthening quickly. Still changeable, so layers are wise.

Rainfall: 56mm
Sunshine: 125.1 hours
April Avg 14.7°C / 6.1°C

One of the driest months of the year on average, with a big jump in sunshine hours over March. Classic bright-and-breezy spring weather, good for Southampton Common waking up for the season.

Rainfall: 52.3mm
Sunshine: 181.6 hours
May Avg 18°C / 9.2°C

A genuine highlight - mild, increasingly warm, low rainfall and the second-sunniest month of the year - all before the summer school-holiday crowds arrive. Arguably the best value month on this list.

Rainfall: 47.4mm
Sunshine: 215.5 hours
June Avg 20.6°C / 12°C

Warm and reliably sunny, and home to Southampton's most extreme weather record: the UK's highest ever June temperature, 35.6°C, was recorded here in 1976. Most years are far more comfortable than that, but it shows what the city's sheltered position can produce.

Rainfall: 56.9mm
Sunshine: 211.7 hours
July Avg 22.6°C / 13.9°C

The standout month in the data: the warmest, driest and sunniest month of the year all at once. If you only look at one row in this table, this is it - though it's also the peak of the summer holiday season, so expect busier attractions and roads.

Rainfall: 44mm
Sunshine: 223.8 hours
August Avg 22.5°C / 14°C

Almost as warm as July with slightly more rainfall and slightly less sunshine - still comfortably the warmest run of the year, and the warmest overnight lows too.

Rainfall: 58.9mm
Sunshine: 205.8 hours
September Avg 20.1°C / 11.6°C

A quieter, still-mild shoulder month - schools are back, but the weather often doesn't know it yet. A good choice for the Southampton International Boat Show without July or August's crowds.

Rainfall: 60.5mm
Sunshine: 152 hours
October Avg 15.9°C / 9.2°C

Autumn arrives properly - a sharp jump in rainfall from September and noticeably less sunshine. Still mild by UK standards, but pack a waterproof.

Rainfall: 92.6mm
Sunshine: 112.7 hours
November Avg 12.2°C / 5.7°C

The wettest month of the year on average, and one of the darkest. This is also when the Christmas Market and lights switch-on get going in the city centre, so festive atmosphere comes with a good chance of rain - a coat is essential, not optional.

Rainfall: 99.9mm
Sunshine: 76.3 hours
December Avg 9.3°C / 3.5°C

Cold, damp and the least sunshine of any month - but also peak Christmas Market season in Southampton, so plenty of visitors come anyway for the atmosphere rather than the weather.

Rainfall: 96.9mm
Sunshine: 55.3 hours
