Solent Sea Temperature Tracker

A running record of sea temperature at the mouth of the Solent

Popular with open-water swimmers as much as sailors, this page tracks sea temperature through the season at Sandown Bay, on the eastern, open-sea side of the Isle of Wight where the Solent meets the Channel. Bramblemet, the well-known mid-Solent buoy, does measure sea temperature too, but only ever publishes it baked into a small chart image with no usable number behind it — so this page instead draws on the Channel Coastal Observatory's Sandown Bay wave buoy, which reports a genuine live reading.

Earlier points sampled every few days from the Channel Coastal Observatory's public archive; from 4 Jul 2026 onward this page checks for a fresh reading every couple of hours and logs each one under its own timestamp, so resolution keeps improving the longer it runs.
